ABSTRACT
This personal essay proffers a theory of cancer survivorship that captures and re ects a personal and lived experience from the patient point-of-view. The author draws upon events from his own cancer diagnosis and treatment and considers how they have become structures upon which he has built his life, including his career as a cancer care provider, a scientist, and an advocate for equity and fairness. The author suggests that a theory of survivorship be built around the personal and lived notion of “living with, through, and beyond cancer” and the stories that people tell of their own experience. He notes that a theory of survivorship can and should be a powerful framework for advancing cancer care and research.
