ABSTRACT
Abstract
Backround
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare neuroendocrine malignan- cy affecting usually older patients. We present our experience with management of MCC in patients aged > 75 years.
Methods
We retrospectively reviewed the records of three patients affected by MCC.
Results
MCC lesions occurred in the lower extremities region in two cases,in lymph nodes in the last case. Two patients underwent surgery, two patients received radiotherapy; all patients received avelumab due to advanced disease. Tolerability with immunotherapy was good de- spite of old age. More frequent side effects include fatigue/lack of energy, musculoskeletal pain (back pain, neck pain, pain in extremi- ties), diarrhea, nausea, infusion-related reactions (chills, fever, back pain, hypersensitivity reactions and low blood pressure), rash and skin redness, decreased appetite.
Conclusions
Based on our experience, integration of surgery, radiotherapy and immunotherapy is important for a correct management of MCC in older patients.
