ABSTRACT
Abstract
Germ cell tumors are rare cancers mainly arising in the testes. Only 5% of such tumors have origin in extragonadal organs or areas like anterior mediastinum, retroperitoneum, or very rarely in pineal gland, or the coccyx area. They are histologically divided into se- minoma and non seminoma or mixed tumors, the latter when both entities are present. They occur in young adults and are the most frequent solid tumors in the range of 15- 39 years; the overall survi- val is 98-99% in stage 1 and even in advanced disease nearly 80% of patients are cured.
After the age of 50 years there is a mark decline in their frequency, while data are nearly lacking in patients older than 60 years.
We present a rare case of a 77-year-old man with clinical stage 1 stage mixed non seminoma germ cell tumor successfully treated with chemotherapy in the adjuvant setting.
