ABSTRACT
Pain management in the elderly patient requires understanding of the causes and the type of pain, of co-existing diseases, the liver and kidney function. To choose the analgesic therapy should be taken into account the intensity, duration, the onset of pain, the degree of suffering that pain produces in the individual patient. The treatment of pain in the elderly must take account of changes in the kinetics and dynamics of drugs and regular monitoring of the effectiveness and tolerability of the drugs used is important.
Only a close doctor-patient relationship facilitates good compliance to medication and allows the therapeutic goal.
