Title: Depression in older patients with cancer
AGO - Arguments of Geriatric Oncology
ABSTRACT
The problem of depression in elderly cancer patients remains a poorly treated topic. The frequency of under-threshold mood disorders is related to an increased risk of under-diagnosis and under-treatment. In the elderly population with cancer these values can reach 31 % and are however related to the type of cancer, treatments, psycho-social support and age. The presence of depression counteracts the adherence to treatments, favours suicidal ideation, worsens the outcomes of illness, quality of Life , physical activities, affects social relations, and increases pain perception. We discuss etiopathogenesis od depression, diagnosis and the management with particular attention to pharmacological treatment and also to relaxation techniques and psychosocial interventions.
Keywords: Depression, older patients, terapeutic modality.
MeMo
